Now Playing LA Weekly's Pick of the Week

Molly Sweeney, by Irish playwright Brian Friel, is loosely based on a case history entitled To See and Not See, profiled by neurologist Oliver Sacks.  In Friel's story, Molly Sweeney is a middle-aged woman, blind from infancy, who undergoes an operation to restore her physical sight. The play ultimately asks two questions:  How functional and acceptable are we because we are physically sighted?  Are we less so when we do this with our eyes as opposed to our souls and minds?  Friel's story, filled with hope, humor and more than a fair share of vanity, examines how a medical procedure generates an emotional and spiritual blindness in Molly and those around her, swapping one functional world for another not ever lived.
